The
Marshalls Mall wasn't really much of a mall. The site was first
utilized to build a single store in 1961. In the early 1970s, this
building was razed and a small mall was constructed in its place. The
"mall" initially consisted of 4 or 5 stores surrounding an atrium, but
the addition of a 44,100 sq. ft. Marshalls anchor in 1975 increased
mall traffic significantly. For years, the mall remained in this
configuration as the mall's smaller tenants came and left.
By the
1990s, the mall was becoming tired. The construction of the Natick Mall
and Shoppers World would be fatal to the Marshalls Mall, which became
even clearer when Marshalls chose to relocate to the then-new Shoppers
World in 1995. However, the new malls were able to create a retail
metropolis that extended to the surrounding plazas and eventually
enabled the Marshalls Mall's vacancy to be filled and then some. In
1996,
the entire mall, including the Marshalls anchor, was gutted and the
entire mall was transformed into a Bed Bath & Beyond store. Bed
Bath & Beyond opened in 1997. In 2006, Bed Bath & Beyond
embarked on a store renovation.
